Coursework Petition

Students may transfer courses equivalent to ANTH 1ANTH 2, and ANTH 3 from California community colleges and universities with existing articulation agreements (www.assist.org).

Students may also petition to transfer courses equivalent to ANTH 1ANTH 2, and ANTH 3 from other community colleges or from four-year institutions.

Students may petition up to 10 quarter credits (equivalent to two UC Santa Cruz courses) of upper-division transfer credit toward the elective requirements under the following circumstances:

  • A student has taken an upper-division anthropology course at another four-year university (including courses taken through study abroad) and wants to petition for the course to count toward the anthropology major or minor elective.
  • A student was enrolled in an accredited Field School Program and wants to petition for the course to count toward the anthropology elective requirements.

Process for Coursework Petition

Step 1: Login to UCSC Google Account

You must be logged into your UCSC Google account to access the coursework petition.

Step 2: Enter your name and select Petition Type

Upon clicking the link to the Anthropology Coursework Petition, student will see an alert indicating the Google account that is signed in.  Please make sure that you are signed in to your UCSC Google account.  You will be prompted to enter your full name and select the petition type. You will not be able to submit the form until all fields are completed.

Step 3: Complete form in DocuSign

Upon submitting their name and petition type, student will be redirected to DocuSign to complete the form.  If the petition is incomplete, the Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor will delete the petition, and the student must start a new petition.

Step 4: Once student has signed the form, it will be sent to the Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor to review.

The Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor will review the petition for completeness. 
  • If the petition is incomplete, the Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor will delete the petition and notify the student.
  • If the petition is complete,  the  Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor will forward the petition to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
  • Courses petitions listing courses with existing articulation agreements do not require further approval by the Director of Undergaduate Studies and will go directly to Step 6.

Step 5: Director of Undergraduate Studies Reviews Petition

The Director of Undergraduate Studies will review petitions and either approve/deny whether course(s) can be used to satisfy lower-divison/upper-division elective major/minor requirements.

Step 6: Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor Processes Coursework in MyUCSC and Completes Petition

Approval of ANTH 1, ANTH 2, and/or ANTH 3
  • Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor processes "Other Credit Quick" to indicate satisfaction of course prerequisite.
  • Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor processes "Requirement Waiver" in Degree Progress Report to indicate that major/minor is satisfied.
Approval for Upper-Division Elective Credit
  • If Office of Admissions processed credit transferred from another institution, Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor processes "Course Directive" in Degree Progress Report to indicate that one elective is satisfied.
  • If Office of Admissions has not processed credit transferred from another institution, Anthropology Undergraduate Advisor processes "Requirement Waiver" in Degree Progress Report to indicate that one elective is satisfied.

Step 7: Student saves the completed form for their records.

The student will receive the completed DocuSign petition indicating whether each course is approved or denied.  If denied, there will be a brief explanation.
