Three junior faculty members from the Department of Anthropology will each be awarded Hellman Fellowships for 2019-20. Assistant Professors Nidhi Mahajan, Savannah Shange, and Jerry Zee have all joined the department in the past two years and were selected for this award, which aims to provide funding for faculty members early in their careers.

The Hellman Fellows Program provides research support to junior faculty in all fields of study, and can help bridge funding streams between start-up packages and the later flow of competitive external funding. The program is active at the ten campuses of the University of California and four private institutions, but the application and selection process for the award occurs within each individual campus.

In 2018, Vicky Oelze, who is also an assistant professor in the department, was awarded a Hellman Fellowship.
