Boluwaji David Ajayi, originally from Nigeria, is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology. His research interest primarily focuses on the nature of social complexities that engendered everyday life of settlements on the margins of early cities and empires in the Yoruba-Edo region of Southwestern Nigeria from the 18th to 20th centuries

He is an experienced archaeologist in field and laboratory techniques, a mentor to several young African archaeologists, and a member of several archaeological associations. In 2024, he won the Social Sciences Division’s Milam-McGinty Kaun Award for Outstanding Teaching. The UC Santa Cruz news team caught up with him to discuss the award, his experiences at UC Santa Cruz, and his career goals.

How did it feel to win this award, and how will it impact your work?

When I received notice of the award, it was a testament that my diligence had been recognized, and this made me glad. Over the past two years of teaching at UC Santa Cruz, I have received several encouraging emails from students about my contributions to their learning. However, reading the email recognizing my teaching excellence left me amazed, emotional, and grateful.

This recognition has strongly motivated me to continue striving for excellence. It was a memorable moment for me, and I am grateful to everyone that made this possible. It may open up more opportunities and responsibilities to contribute productively. The associated funds will support my 2024 summer research project, bringing me closer to achieving my academic and professional goals as an archaeologist.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz?

I have a couple of plans. First, I hope to secure a position as an assistant professor of archaeology at a university, or obtain a post-doctoral opportunity where I can continue my research and contribute to teaching. Second, I intend to collaborate with colleagues to enrich archaeological studies in my home country by partnering with local institutions to devise new methods and theories.

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out for you?

The faculty, facilities, and fellowships at UC Santa Cruz make it truly exceptional. The Anthropology Department boasts faculty members who are experts in archaeological anthropology, and even those outside this specialization are always willing to assist. The research facilities are outstanding; they are well-equipped for training and research. Additionally, UC Santa Cruz offers numerous fellowships and funding opportunities to support research endeavors. All of these are a perfect mix for scholarship and my personal development.

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz?

UC Santa Cruz is a paradise of opportunity—use it well. Don’t hesitate to seek help, no matter how small your concern; someone is always willing to listen and assist.
