Transfer Students
Approximately 40% of all students in the Anthropology major are junior transfers. This page
addresses issues that are specific to transfer students. If you have any further questions or
concerns, seek assistance from department advisors.
DECLARING THE MAJOR
The department strongly recommends that transfer students begin their academic planning and complete
the declaration of major during their first quarter at UCSC. Starting the planning process early
will allow you to take advantage of all the opportunities UCSC has to offer.
COURSE
It is suggested that all transfer students take Anthropology 150, "Communicating Anthropology," during their first
year at UCSC. This course is designed to provide transfer students with a transition from community
college to UCSC coursework. It emphasizes critical reading and writing skills and is an excellent
foundation for further upper-division coursework. This class fulfills an upper-division elective.
Most upper-division Anthropology courses are offered only on an every-other-year basis. Transfer
students are advised to plan accordingly.
TRANSFERRING CREDITS
Courses taken at community colleges or four-year universities may be used to satisfy the lower division
requirements for the major. View the UC Articulation Agreements to determine which California community
college courses are equivalent to our Anthropology 1,2, and 3.
You may also apply up to ten units (two classes) of upper division credit towards the major. These
credits must be taken at four-year universities, through EAP, or through an approved field study
program. Each course must be approved by the undergraduate director. For more information about the
approval and waiver process, see the Undergraduate Handbook.
If you are transferring any credit towards the Anthropology major, you must provide the department
with an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) and a copy of your UCSC Transfer Credit Summary.
RESOURCES
There are many resources available to transfer students at UCSC. In addition to departmental advising,
you can contact your college office or the STARS (Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students) office
for information and assistance.
