| Advising Home The Anthropology Department provides many advising resources for undergraduates and encourages students to seek assistance in their academic planning and guidance throughout the course of their undergraduate careers. UNDERGRADUATE ADVISORThe undergraduate advisor is a staff member who can assist you with the declaration of major, academic planning, forms, field school and internship placements, independent studies, the Education Abroad Program, the UCDC program, and general information. The undergraduate advisor is available for advising on a drop-in basis Monday-Thursday 9:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm. These hours are subject to change.FACULTYStudents are encouraged to get to know their professors. Anthropology faculty hold regular office hours and are very accessible. Faculty can provide information about their research and courses, the department, the discipline of Anthropology, field schools, and graduate programs. Faculty also assist with the declaration of major process and supervise independent studies and senior theses.PEER ADVISINGUndergraduates can also seek assistance from the Anthropology department peer advisors. Peer advisors are juniors and seniors in the major who are trained to help students with questions regarding major and minor requirements, academic planning, faculty, and courses. Peer advisors speak from their own experience and are an excellent resource for students trying to figure out how to tailor the major to their interests and how to get the most out of their experience at UCSC. Many peer advisors are transfer students, so they are also familiar with transfer student concerns. Peer advisors hold office hours in the Department Office (Social Sciences 1, 361) and the Ethnographic Library (Social Sciences 1, 328).Their hours are Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A complete schedule is posted quarterly at the Department Office. Students who are interested in becoming peer advisors can pick up an application at the Department Office. Peer advisors receive two units of credit per quarter up to a maximum of six units. CAREER ADVISINGThe UCSC Career Center and Anthropology Department work together to provide information about careers in Anthropology and jobs for Anthropology majors. Workshops on field schools, graduate placements, and careers in each of the three subfields are offered on an annual basis.The Career Center located on the third floor of the new Bay Tree Bookstore building. Advisors at the center work with students who already have well-focused plans as well as with those who wish to explore a variety of career options. The Center has an excellent library and offers frequent workshops on choosing a career, resume writing, interview techniques, and job search strategies. They also have numerous resources to assist students in finding work-study positions, on-campus employment, summer jobs, internships, and alternative job placements, such as positions working abroad. Students are advised to visit the Career Center early in their academic careers.
