Faculty

The UCSC Anthropology department has eighteen permanent faculty members teaching in the subdisciplines of Anthropological Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, and Physical Anthropology. They are joined each quarter by visiting lecturers, researchers, and teaching fellows, creating a vibrant academic community. Many of our faculty have been recognized with excellence in teaching awards.

May N. Diaz, Professor Emerita
Research Focus: Teaching Specialties: Cultural anthropology (theory, comparative peasant societies, complex society), Mexico, contemporary Latin American and European peasants, anthropology and history. Diane K. Lewis, Professor Emerita
Research Focus: Teaching Specialties: Applied anthropology, medical anthropology, epidemiology and nthropology, development anthropology. Area of Research: Minorities and AIDS. Area of Fieldwork: U.S.A. (currently); Malaysia (formerly).

Richard R. Randolph, Professor Emeritus
Research Focus: Teaching Specialties: Theory, Middle East, California, literature and anthropology and history. Area of Research: Middle East, Islam, Bedouin Arabs, California. Area of Fieldwork: Mexico, Middle East.

Stuart A. Schlegel, Professor Emeritus
Research Focus: Teaching Specialties: Intellectual history, Southeast Asia, Anthropology of religion and law. Area of Research: Indonesia and the Philippines. Area of Fieldwork: Philippines, Indonesia, and the United States.
