Research Focus 
Teaching Specialties: Intellectual history, Southeast Asia, Anthropology of religion and law. Area of Research: Indonesia and the Philippines. Area of Fieldwork: Philippines, Indonesia, and the United States.

Long Description 
In retirement, Stuart Schlegel continues to write and lecture on the Tiruray people of southwestern Mindanao in the Philippines, as well as in the general areas if religion, law, and cosmology. His current projects include the following:

  • The "cosmic vision" of the Tiruray: their cosmology understandings and the social and ethical beliefs that are grounded in that cosmology.
  • The Tiruray as a "partnership" society, in which all social relations are understood in a context of radical egalitarianism.
  • A collection of papers and articles on the Tiruray.
